Bilateral diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Algeria
On December 26, 1991, the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Diplomatic relations were established between the two countries on April 22, 1994.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Algeria was opened in 2016.
Since 2015, the Algerian diplomatic office in Baku has been established. Later in 2019, Algeria established its Embassy in Azerbaijan.
There is a political consultation mechanism between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. On November 29, 2023, the first round of political consultations between the two countries was held in Baku.
A certain dynamic trend has been observed in the exchange of visits between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria in recent years. During this period, mutual visits were made at different levels (minister and deputy minister, chairman of the parliament, head and deputy of the committee, chairman of the agency, ombudsman, sheikhs, and chairman of the court).
High-level visits and active contacts between Azerbaijan and Algeria, as well as effective cooperation on international platforms, inter-parliamentary relations and dynamic interaction in various fields have raised bilateral relations to a higher level. The political will of the leaders of both countries for the development of mutual relations in all areas indicates that Azerbaijan-Algeria relations have wide prospects. The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria has always supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan on a bilateral basis and within international organizations.
Mutual visits of the Heads of the States
- On October 24-26, 2019, Algerian President Abdelkader Bensalah visited Azerbaijan to participate in the XVIII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.
- On November 1, 2022, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev visited Algeria as a guest of honor to participate at the 31st Summit of the League of Arab States held in Algeria as the chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Mutual visits of the Prime Ministers
- On March 2, 2023, Prime Minister of Algeria Ayman Abdurrahman visited Azerbaijan to participate in the Summit meeting of the Contact Group of the Non-Aligned Movement on the fight against COVID-19 held in Baku.
Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
- Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Communities Abroad of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, visited Azerbaijan to participate in the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordination Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Baku on July 5-6, 2023.
Inter-parliamentary relations
There is a working group on Azerbaijan-Algeria inter-parliamentary relations in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and an inter-parliamentary friendship group in the National People's Assembly of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.
- 30 June- 1 July, 2022 Chairman of the National People's Assembly of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria Ibrahim Bougali visited Azerbaijan to participate in the Baku Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network.
- On January 29-30, 2023 the delegation led by the Chairperson of the Milli Majlis Ms. Sahiba Gafarova visited Algeria to participate in the OIC Inter-Parliamentary Summit held in Algeria.
Contractual and legal framework
In total, four documents were signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
