Bilateral relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Congo

 

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Congo were established on March 19, 2018.


On April 3, 2024, Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, issued Order No. 75 to appoint Sultan Hajiyev as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Congo, with his residence in Nairobi. On July 2, 2024, Sultan Hajiyev presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Congo, Mr. Denis Sassou-Nguesso.


On February 7, 2023, Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, received the credentials of David Maduka as an ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Congo to the Republic of Azerbaijan, residing in Moscow.


Azerbaijan and Congo have the potential to enhance their political, economic, and trade relations, and it is crucial to further build upon existing collaboration. 


Mutual contacts between the two countries have intensified during Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The delegation, led by Jean-Claude Gakosso, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francophonie, and Congolese Abroad of the Republic of Congo, paid a working visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which was held in Baku on October 21–26, 2019.


On March 27-29, 2024, a group of officials from numerous Azerbaijani government agencies undertook a working visit to the Republic of the Congo to examine possible avenues of collaboration between the two countries.

 

On March 3-7, 2024, a delegation led by Minister François Joly, Personal Representative of the President of the Republic of Congo for Strategic Issues and International Cooperation, paid a visit to Azerbaijan. During the visit, a series of meetings took place at the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SOCAR, and various other institutions.

 

On April 3-5, 2024, the President of the Republic of Congo, Mr. Denis Sassou-Nguesso, paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan. During the visit, meetings were held in both bilateral and expanded formats with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev, and a number of documents were signed between the two countries. As a part of his visit, President Denis Sassou-Nguesso met with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ali Asadov, and the Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova.


On July 2-4, 2024, the delegation led by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, President-designate of COP29, attended the first international conference on "Afforestation and Restoration" held in Brazzaville. During the trip, he was received by the President of the Republic of Congo, Mr. Denis Sassou-Nguesso, and and engaged in discussions with various state officials.

 

Contractual and legal framework


Four documents on cooperation in various fields have been signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Congo.
