Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of South Africa (RSA)
On April 29, 1992, the Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations was signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of South Africa.
On August 16, 2011, by Order No. 1689 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elkhan Polukh oglu Polukhov was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of South Africa. Currently, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of South Africa operates at the level of a temporary chargé d'affaires.
The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Turkey has accreditation in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
There is a political consultation mechanism between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of South Africa.
On October 24, 2022, the 3rd round of political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Africa was held in Baku.
The Republic of Azerbaijan is interested in the development of relations with the Republic of South Africa and the expansion of cooperation in various fields. There is a mutually beneficial cooperation between the countries on a bilateral basis and within the framework of international organizations. Both countries possess numerous opportunities to develop mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas of shared interest. There is a working group on interparliamentary relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of South Africa. The intensity of the mutual visits of the speakers of parliaments in recent years shows the potential for further development of the existing cooperation in the future.
Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
- On May 3, 1999, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Africa A. Nzo, visited Azerbaijan.
- On February 20-27, 2014, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov visited the Republic of South Africa.
- On November 28-29, 2016, a delegation led by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa Ms. Maite Nkoana-Mashabane visited the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Inter-parliamentary relations
There is a working group on interparliamentary relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of South Africa.
- From June 30 to July 1, 2022, the Speaker of the Republic of South Africa Parliament Nosivive Mapisa Ngakula visited the Republic of Azerbaijan to participate in the Baku conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network.
- On February 8-10, 2023, the Speaker of the AR Milli Majlis Ms. Sahiba Gafarova visited the Republic of South Africa.
- On May 15-18, 2023, Speaker of the Republic of South Africa Parliament Nosivive Mapisa Ngakula visited the Republic of Azerbaijan to participate in a special session organized by the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Great Leader Heydar Aliyev.
