Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Serbia

 

The former Yugoslavia recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 31 December 1991, and bilateral diplomatic relations between the Union of Serbia and Montenegro and the Republic of Azerbaijan were established on 21 August 1997.

 

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Serbia was opened on 8 June 2011. The Embassy of Serbia in Azerbaijan was opened in February 2011.

 

Azerbaijan and Serbia enjoy strategic partnership. "Declaration on friendly relations and strategic partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Serbia" was signed in Baku on 8 February 2013. "Joint Action Plan on Strategic Partnership" was signed in Baku on 21 May 2018. A Memorandum on the establishment of Strategic Partnership Council was signed in Belgrade on 23 November 2022.   

 

Azerbaijan attaches importance to the development of relations with Serbia, and cooperation between the two countries covers political, economic and humanitarian spheres.

 

Mutual visits of the Heads of the States

- President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has made 2 official visits and 1 working visit to the Republic of Serbia. The last visit was undertaken on 10 December 2023.

- President of the Republic of Serbia has made 5 visits to Azerbaijan. The last visit (working) by the President Aleksandar Vučić was made on 20 December 2022.

 

Mutual visits of the Prime Ministers

On 13-15 April 2015, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić paid a working visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

 

Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs

- Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan have paid 6 visits to Serbia. The last visit (official) was made by the Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on 6-7 November 2023.

- Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Serbia have paid 9 visits to Azerbaijan. The last visit (working) was made by Ivitsa Dacic on March 2, 2023.

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

A working group on the Azerbaijan-Serbia inter-parliamentary relations has been established in Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The parliamentary group is headed by Malahat Ibrahimgizi MP. The Serbian-Azerbaijani inter-parliamentary friendship group has been established in Serbian Parliament. The parliamentary group is headed by Dushan Maric.

 

- The delegation led by the Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova paid an official visit to Serbia on 24-25 May 2023.

- The Chairman of the Parliament (National Assembly) of the Republic of Serbia paid 3 visits to the Republic of Azerbaijan. The last visit (official) was made by the Chairman of the National Assembly Vladimir Orlich on 5-7 October 2023.

 

Contractual and legal framework

57 bilateral agreements have been signed between the two countries during 2010-2023.

 

Economic cooperation

The Intergovernmental Commission on trade and economic cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Serbia was established in June 2011.

 

The co-chairs of the commission from Azerbaijan and Serbia are Minister of Labor and Social Protection Sahil Babayev, and Minister of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Nikola Selakovich, respectively. The last (VII) meeting of the Commission was held on 28 April 2023 in Belgrade.
