Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Kingdom of Spain
The Kingdom of Spain recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on December 31, 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on February 11, 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Kingdom of Spain (Madrid) was set up according to the Law dated March 11, 2005.
On May 5, 2014, by the relevant decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, the Representative Office of the Spanish Embassy in Ankara, was opened in Baku.
Azerbaijan attaches importance to its bilateral relations with Spain and cooperation between two countries involves political, economic and humanitarian areas.
Mutual visits of the Heads of the States
- On November 29, 2013, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev met with Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, on the side-lines of the Vilnius Summit on the Eastern Partnership of the European Union.
Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
- On June 4-5, 2007, M.A. Moratinos, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain visited Azerbaijan, in his role as the Chairman-in-office of the OSCE.
- On June 15-17, 2011, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan E. Mammadyarov paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Spain.
- On April 22-24, 2014, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain H.M. Garcia-Margayo paid an official visit to Azerbaijan.
- On April 25-27, 2016, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain H.M.Garcia-Margayo visited Azerbaijan to participate in the VII Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
- On September 6-8, 2022, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan J. Bayramov paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Spain.
- On May 17, 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov held meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Europeun Union and Coopeation of the Kingdom of Spain Jose Manuel Albares Bueno in the margins of the 4th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the European Union.
Inter-parliamentary relations
The working group for the inter-parliamentary relations with Spain comprises 14 MPs and is headed by Sevil Mikayilova MP.
The Spanish Parliament (Cortes Generales) does not pursue a policy of parliamentary engagement through inter-parliamentary working groups with other countries. The Spanish-Azerbaijani inter-parliamentary working group, which was functional until March 5, 2019, was chaired by José María Chiquillo Barber of the "People's Party" (Partido Popular - PP).
- On 28 November 2021 Chairman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova paid a working visit to the Kingdom of Spain.
Contractual and legal framework
Over the course of 2010-2023, 7 bilateral agreements on cooperation in a number of areas of mutual interest were signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Kingdom of Spain.
Economic cooperation
24 Spanish companies are involved in industry, construction, trade, service, agriculture, etc. in Azerbaijan.
