Bilateral diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and the Republic of Hungary
Hungary recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 26 December 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 27 April 1992.
The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Hungary opened on 1 September 2004. The Hungarian Embassy in Azerbaijan opened on 12 January 2009.
Azerbaijan and Hungary enjoy strategic partnership. On 11 November 2014, the "Joint Declaration on the establishment of strategic partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Hungary" was signed, and on 30 January, 2023, the "Joint Declaration on the enhanced strategic partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Hungary" was signed.
Azerbaijan attaches importance to the development of relations with Hungary, and cooperation between the two countries covers political, economic and humanitarian spheres.
Mutual visits of the Heads of the States
- President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, visited Hungary on five occasions. The last visits took place on January 29-30 (official) and August 20-21 (working) 2023.
Mutual visits of the Prime Ministers
- Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban has paid 5 visits to Azerbaijan. The last visit (working) took place on November 23-24, 2023.
Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov visited Hungary on August 20 2023 and and on 4-5 September 2023 for working and official visits respectively.
- Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Peter Siyarto, has made more than 10 visits to Azerbaijan. The last visit (working) took place on April 25-26, 2024.
Inter-parliamentary relations
A working group on the Azerbaijan-Hungary inter-parliamentary relations has been created in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The parliamentary group is headed by Ali Huseynli MP, first deputy chairman of the Milli Majlis.
The Hungarian-Azerbaijani friendship group operates in the Hungarian Parliament. The parliamentary group is headed by Attila Tilki MP.
- Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis, visited Hungary on 28-30 June 2021 and on 13-14 September, 2023 for official and working visits respectively.
Contractual and legal framework
57 bilateral agreements have been signed between Azerbaijan and Hungary.
Economic cooperation
The Azerbaijan-Hungary Intergovernmental Joint Commission provides an important mechanism for the development of economic and commercial relations between the two countries. The commission has held 9 meetings, tha last of which was organised on 26 April 2024 in Baku. The co-chairmen of the commission from Azerbaijan and Hungary are Sahil Babayev, Minister of Labor and Social Protection and Peter Siyarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary respectively.
