Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Swiss Confederation
Switzerland recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 23rd of December 1991. Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations with Switzerland on 21 January 1992.
Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Switzerland was set up on 6 October 2004 and began to function in Bern from September 2005.
The Swiss Embassy in Azerbaijan was established in 2007 and was officially inaugurated in May 2008.
Azerbaijan attaches importance to its bilateral relations with Switzerland and the bilateral ties involve political, economic and humanitarian areas.
Mutual visits of the Heads of the States
- President of the Republic of Azerbaijan travelled to Switzerland on 19 occasions for working visits. The last visit took place during the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum on January 16-20, 2023.
- Swiss Presidents visited Azerbaijan 3 times. The last such visit was undertaken by President Didier Burkhalter on June 1-2, 2014.
Mutual visits of the Vice Presidents
- Mrs.Mehriban Aliyeva, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, visited Switzerland in 2018, 2019 and 2020 to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
- Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has paid 6 visits to Switzerland, the last of which was undertaken by Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on September 11-13, 2023.
- Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter paid a visit to Azerbaijan in 2015 to participate in the opening ceremony of the 1st European Games held in Azerbaijan.
Inter-parliamentary relations
The Azerbaijan-Swiss inter-parliamentary working group was set up in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan on October 2, 2006. Switzerland-Azerbaijani inter-parliamentary friendship group was founded on March 2, 2009.
Swiss Parliamentary Speaker visited Azerbaijan 3 times, while Azerbaijan’s Parliamentary Speaker paid 2 visits to Switzerland.
- On October 10-11, 2019, the President of the Council of Cantons (Senate) Jean-René Fournier paid an official visit to Azerbaijan.
- On May 9-11, 2022, H.E. Mrs.Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Milli Majlis visited Switzerland for an official visit.
Contractual and legal framework
31 bilateral agreements have been signed between the two countries.
Economic cooperation
The Joint Commission on trade and economic cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Council of the Swiss Confederation was established in 2003. The last meeting of the Joint Commission was held in Baku on 13 December 2022.
