Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran

The Islamic Republic of Iran recognized the independence of Azerbaijan on the 25th of December 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 12th of March 1992. Iranian Consulate, which was first opened in Baku in 1969, has been operating as the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Republic of Azerbaijan since March 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Islamic Republic of Iran has been operating since December 1992. Since December 1992, the Consulate General of Iran has been active in the city of Nakhchivan, while the Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan has been operating in the city of Tabriz since the 20th of October 2004.

On the 28th to the 29th of March 2018, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr Hassan Rouhani, paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.


On the 12th of August 2018, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, within the framework of the 5th Summit of the Caspian littoral states in Aktau, Kazakhstan.

On the 24th to the 25th of October 2019, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr Hassan Rouhani, visited the Republic of Azerbaijan to participate in the 18th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Baku.

On the 15th of March 2018, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, visited the Republic of Azerbaijan to attend the first quadripartite meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Türkiye.

On the 4th to the 6th of April 2018, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, visited the Republic of Azerbaijan to attend the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Baku.

On the 9th of December 2020, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, visited the Islamic Republic of Iran.

On the 24th to the 25th of January 2021, a delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, visited the Republic of Azerbaijan.

On the 24th to the 26th of May 2021, a delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad, Javad Zarif, visited the Republic of Azerbaijan.
 

Inter-parliamentary relations
 

The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Iranian Inter-Parliamentary Relations is headed by Vasif Talibov. The Friendship Group for Iranian-Azerbaijani Parliamentary Relations is chaired by Mr Ali Nikzad Samrin.
 

Contractual and legal framework

In total, 188 documents were signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
 

Economic co-operation

The trade turnover between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2018 amounted to US $ 446.03 MM, including the volume of imports amounted to US $ 414.80 MM, and the volume of exports amounted to US $ 31.23 MM.
 

Investment has increased, with Iran investing a total of US$ 3.4 billion in Azerbaijan.

Goods exported from the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Islamic Republic of Iran: the food industry residues and wastes, oilseeds and medicinal plants, apples.

Goods imported to the Republic of Azerbaijan from the Islamic Republic of Iran: natural gas, plastic products, fruits and vegetables, inorganic chemicals, construction materials (glass, ceramics).

The State Commission for Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been operating since 1992. The Azerbaijani co-chair of the commission is the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Shahin Mustafayev, and the co-chair of the Iranian party is the Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Farhad Dejpasand.
