Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Republic of China

The history of the Azerbaijani-Chinese relations dates back to the ancient Silk Road; this is as far back as 2,500 years ago, when there were trade and cultural ties between our peoples through the ancient Silk Road. The historical connection between our peoples is also reflected in the works written by the great Azerbaijani poet, Nizami Ganjavi, in the 12th century. Nizami expressed his respect and esteem for the Chinese people in his poem “The Seven Beauties”, where he described the beauty of the Princess of China.

With the recognition of the independence of Azerbaijan by the People's Republic of China on the 27th of December 1991 and the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations on the 2nd of April 1992, the Azerbaijani-Chinese relations entered a new stage. The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened in 1992, and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the People's Republic of China was opened on the 3rd of September 1993.

Today, Azerbaijan attaches special importance to bilateral relations with the People's Republic of China and is interested in expanding these relations in all areas of economy.

The relations on the basis of mutual trust and friendship between the heads of the two countries have paved the way for the current high pace of development in the political, economic, military, humanitarian, cultural and other spheres.

Thanks to the active political dialogue between Azerbaijan and China, significant progress is being made in such areas as the energy, economy, trade, communications, transport and logistics, tourism and humanitarian activities.

It is worth noting that the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, launched by the People's Republic of China in 2013, has created new opportunities for deepening our bilateral relations. As one of the first countries to support the One Belt, One Road initiative, Azerbaijan is making a significant contribution to the implementation of this initiative with its large-scale transport and infrastructure projects. Thus, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars and Baku International Sea Trade Port, initiated by Azerbaijan, formed the Trans-Caspian East-West Transport Corridor, thus providing a short and convenient alternative route for cargo transportation from China to the West.

On the 24th to the 27th of April 2019, a delegation led by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid a working visit to China to participate in the second “One Belt, One Road” International Cooperation Forum.

On the 14th of March 2016, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid a working visit to China.

On the 17th to the 21st of September 2018, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid a working visit to the People's Republic of China.

On the 22nd to the 23rd of May 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi, paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
