Bilateral relations
The Commonwealth of Australia recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 26 December 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 19 June 1992.
On 6 April 2012, the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted the Law on the establishment of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Commonwealth of Australia. The Embassy, located in Canberra, officially commenced its activities in June 2013.
The Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia in the Republic of Türkiye (Ankara) is also accredited to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Commonwealth of Australia is headed by Chargé d'Affaires a.i. Vagif Jafarov.
On 15 August 2025, Ms. Sally-Anne Vincent was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Commonwealth of Australia to the Republic of Azerbaijan (resident in Ankara). The Ambassador presented her credentials to President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on 30 January 2026.
In recent years, positive dynamics have been observed in the development of bilateral relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth of Australia. In particular, the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan has made investments in the Australian securities market.

Inter-parliamentary relations
In 2024, the activities of the Australia–Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Federal Parliament of Australia were resumed, and on 20 March 2024 the Group, comprising 23 senators and members of the House of Representatives, commenced its activities.
Following the federal parliamentary elections held in Australia in May 2025, the 48th Parliament commenced its work in July 2025. On 7 November 2025, the process of formally establishing the Australia–Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group, comprising 22 federal parliamentarians (6 senators and 16 members of the House of Representatives), was completed.
Friendship groups
The working group on Azerbaijan–Australia inter-parliamentary relations in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan is headed by Khanlar Fatiyev.
The Australia–Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Parliament of Australia is chaired by Mr. Mike Freelander, a member of the governing Australian Labor Party, with Mr. Rick Wilson, a member of the opposition Liberal Party, serving as Deputy Chair. Prominent Australian parliamentarians, including the President of the Senate, Senator Sue Lines, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Milton Dick, are also members of the Group.
Legal framework
Currently, there is no legal framework between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth of Australia.
