The Republic of Kazakhstan

 

Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Kazakhstan
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Kazakhstan were established on the 30th of August 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened on the 9th of January 1993. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened on the 1st of March 2004. The Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Aktau (Kazakhstan) was established in 2008.

Informal summit of the CCTS (video-conference) was held on the 9th to the 10th of September 2017 and on the 12th of August 2018. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid a visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan on the 31st of March 2021.

On the 2nd to the 3rd of April 2017, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, paid a visit to Azerbaijan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid a visit to Kazakhstan on 11-13 July 2016 and on 9 June 2017.

Kazakh Foreign Minister, Mukhtar Tleuberdi, visited Azerbaijan during the CCTS Summit and Foreign Ministerial Meeting in Baku on 14-15 October 2019 and during the CSTO Foreign Ministers' Extraordinary Meeting on the 6th of February 2020.

Close friendly relations between the two countries Declaration on friendly relations and strategic partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Kazakhstan signed in Astana on the 1st of March 2004 and Agreement on Strategic Partnership and Alliance between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Kazakhstan signed in Baku on 24 May 2005.

Our countries are doing a lot to strengthen regional cooperation through transport, energy and other projects. Co-operation within the International Trans-Caspian Transport Route, the favourable transit potential and logistics capabilities of our countries lead to an increase in their role in international cargo transportation. The Aktau Production and Logistics Centre, built with Azerbaijani investment in the special zone of the Aktau Seaport, plays an important role in increasing trade and economic relations between our countries. On the 26th of May 2021, the Azerbaijan Trade House was opened in Nur-Sultan.

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have established extensive co-operation in the humanitarian sphere. There are currently 5 centres for the study of Azerbaijani history and culture in Kazakhstan. These are the Centre for the Study of History and Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the Caspian State University of Technology and Engineering named after S.Y. Yesenov in Aktau, the Centre for the Study of History and Cultural Heritage at Atyrau State University, and the Azerbaijan-Gazakh-Turkish University named after Khoja Ahmad Yasavi. The corner is the room of national leader Heydar Aliyev at the Azerbaijan National University named after Al-Farabi in Almaty, the Azerbaijan History and Culture Centre and the Eurasian National University named after Lev Gumilev in Nur-Sultan.

On the 16th of May 2018, the presentation ceremony of the Kazakh edition of the book "Walking Forward" about the life and work of Heydar Aliyev, with a foreword by the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was held in Astana.

The foundation of the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan Friendship Park was laid in the western region of Kazakhstan on the 14th of September 2019, and the opening ceremony of the alley dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijani diplomatic service was held in the Presidential Park of Kazakhstan in Nur-Sultan on the 19th of October.

Kazakh writer, Olzhas Omaruly Suleimenov, was awarded the Order of Honour by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 18th of May 2021.

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

The Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis) has a working group on Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan inter-parliamentary relations, which plays an important role in expanding these relations.

Contractual and legal framework

In total, 121 bilateral documents were signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Products imported to Azerbaijan: natural gas, wheat, natural barium sulphate (gunpowder); crude oil products from crude oil and bituminous minerals.
Products exported to Kazakhstan: white sugar and other chemically pure sucrose, fruits, fruit juices, furniture.

Joint Intergovernmental Commission
In 1999, the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation was established to develop economic co-operation between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
