Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Germany
The Federal Republic of Germany recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 12th of January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 20th of February 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Federal Republic of Germany was opened on the 2nd of September 1992. The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened on the 22nd of September 1992.
Azerbaijani-German relationships have expanded at high levels in all areas. Political dialogue between the two countries has continued through regular reciprocal visits at the highest levels.
On the 17th to the 19th of February 2017, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, was on a working visit to Germany to participate in the 53rd Munich Security Conference.
On the 14th to the 15th of February 2020, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid a working visit to Germany to participate in the 56th Munich Security Conference.
In August 2018, the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mrs Angela Merkel, visited our country.
As planned, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, will take part in the meetings of the Munich Security Conference on the following dates: 17-19 February 2017; 16-18 February 2018; 15-17 February 2019; and 14-15 February 2020.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, was on working visits to Germany.
Inter-parliamentary relations
The Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan has a working group on Azerbaijani-German Inter-Parliamentary relations. The group is chaired by Nurlan Hasanov.
The German Parliament (“Bundestag”) has the German-South Caucasus Parliamentary Group, which is headed by Dr Barbara Hendrix.
Contract-legal base
In total, seventy-seven documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Germany.
Economic co-operation
Germany is one of Azerbaijan's most important economic partners in Europe, while Azerbaijan is the most important economic partner of Germany in the South Caucasus.
The German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce, which was opened in Baku on the 12th of November 2012, is the second foreign trade chamber of Germany (after the one in Moscow) in the CIS countries. The organisation has more than 200 members on both sides.

The German-Azerbaijani High-Level Working Group on Trade and Investment was established on the 5th of May 2011. The Working Group has held seven meetings so far; the first meeting was held in Berlin on the 19th to the 21st of October 2011, and the last 8th meeting was held in Baku on the 31st of January 2019.
