Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Austria have been on a positive development curve. Reciprocal visits at the level of heads of state, including ministers and heads of various government agencies have been an important factor in the development of relations between the two countries.
The Republic of Austria recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 15th of January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 20th of February 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Austria has been active since the 1st of September 1995. The Embassy of the Republic of Austria in the Republic of Azerbaijan has been operating since the 23rd of June 2010.
The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid a working visit to Austria on the 16th of May 2016 and on the 28th to the 30th of March 2019.
On the 6th to the 8th of December 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid a visit to Austria.
On the 25th to the 26th of May 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, paid a working visit to Austria.
Inter-parliamentary relations
The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Austrian Inter-Parliamentary Relations has been operating in the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan since the 13th of December 2005. Currently, the group has 16 members (deputies) and is chaired by Tahir Mirkishili, a member of the parliament.
The Austrian-South Caucasus bilateral parliamentary group (12 deputies) operates in the Austrian Parliament. The leader of the group is Gudrun Kugler.
Contractual and legal framework
In total, forty-one documents were signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria.

The main products imported by Azerbaijan: special vehicles, iron or steel tins, medicines, including veterinary drugs, and equipment for the textile and leather industries, as well as for the processing of food products and feedstuff.
The main products exported by Azerbaijan: petroleum products, raw cotton, fresh and dried fruits and vegetables, rusty metal products.
The Joint Commission for Economic, Agricultural, Industrial, Technical and Technological Cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria was established in 1999.
The Austrian-Azerbaijani Cooperation Council (CCAA) was established in Vienna in November 2018 as a platform for co-operation between the public and private sectors of the two countries. The first meeting of the CCAA Advisory Board, which consists of the Azerbaijani-Austrian government members, was held as part of the President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Austria on the 30th of March 2019.
