Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Italian Republic
Italy recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 1st of January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 8th of May 1992.
The Italian Embassy in Azerbaijan was established in March 1997, and the Azerbaijani Embassy in Italy was opened in December 2003.
On the 18th to the 19th of July 2018, the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, paid an official visit to Azerbaijan. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid his first state visit to Italy on the 19th to the 21st of February 2020.
On the 25th to the 26th of September 2018, the First Vice President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, paid an official visit to Italy.
On the 7th of November 2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Italian Republic, Paolo Gentiloni, paid an official visit to Azerbaijan.
On the 20th of April 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid an official visit to Italy.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid working visits to Italy on the following dates: 24-25 October 2017; 29 March 2018; 5-7 December 2018; and 15-18 December 2019.
Inter-parliamentary relations
The Working Group on Azerbaijani-Italian Inter-Parliamentary Relations in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan consists of 34 people. The group is chaired by Azer Karimli.
The Italian-Azerbaijani Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group officially operates in the Parliament of the Italian Republic under the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The leader of the group is Mr Stefano Lucci, a member of the parliament from the Five Star Movement Party (Italian: Movimento 5 Stelle). There is also the Italian-Azerbaijani Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group that operates unofficially. The head of the group is Mrs Rossana Boldi, a member of the parliament from the Lega Nord (English: Northern League) Party.
Contractual and legal framework
In total, sixty documents were signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Italian Republic.

Italy is the largest trading partner and largest export point of our country.
The product-based structure of the foreign trade turnover of the two countries is dominated by exports of crude oil and oil products to Italy. The structure of imports includes machine-building products, special mechanical devices and machines, machine tools, spare parts, as well as medicines, transformers, construction materials, furniture, food and knitwear.
