Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgia

Friendly and neighbourly relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia have historical roots; they have always been at a high level. “Agreement on strengthening friendship, cooperation and mutual security between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgia”, dated the 8th of March 1996, which laid the foundation of strategic partnership between the two countries, and “Joint Declaration between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgia”, which was signed on the 4th of March 2004, are both important for the future development of constructive relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia.

 

Georgia recognized the independence of Azerbaijan in 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 18th of November 1992. The Azerbaijani Embassy in Georgia has been operating since March 1996.

By Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated the 17th of November 2009, the Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan was established in Batumi, Georgia, and on the 3rd of December 2010, the Consulate General officially started its activity. The Georgian Embassy in Azerbaijan has been operating since February 1995. The Consulate General of Georgia in Ganja was officially opened on the 12th of December 2013.

Inter-parliamentary relations

The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Georgian Inter-Parliamentary Relations has been established in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The head of the working group is Arzu Naghiyev. There is a group of friendship with the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Georgian Parliament. The group is chaired by Vice Speaker Kakhaber Kutchava.

On the 10th to the 11th of March 2016, the President of Georgia, Giorgi Margvelashvili, paid his first working visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan to participate in the 4th Global Baku Forum.

On the 16th to the 17th of February 2019, the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, paid her first working visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan to participate in the 5th Global Baku Forum.

On the 18th to the 19th of February 2016, and on the 29th of August 2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid an official visit to Georgia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Mikheil Canelidze, paid official visits to the Republic of Azerbaijan on these dates: 6-7 March 2016; 5-6 September 2017; 12-13 February 2017; and 15 March 2018.

On the 8th of October 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid a working visit to Georgia to participate in the GUAM event.

On the 24th of September 2020, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, paid an official visit to Georgia.

Exports from Azerbaijan to Georgia: gasoline, diesel fuel, natural gas, kerosene, bitumen, fuel oil, flour and starchy foods, vegetable oil, etc.

Imports from Georgia to Azerbaijan: cement, slag, dross, scrap iron and other ferrous metal processing wastes, mineral and carbonated waters, soft drinks, cattle, medicines packaged for retail sale, etc.  

The Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia was established on the 25th of March 2004.
