Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria

 

The Republic of Austria recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 15 January 1992. Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations with Austria on 20 February 1992.

The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Austria opened on 1 September 1995.

The Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Azerbaijan opened on 23 June 2010.

Azerbaijan has established honorary consulates in the Austrian cities of St Polten and Zalsburg.

"The Joint Declaration on partnership and friendly relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria” is of special importance for the development of bilateral relations between two countries.

 

Mutual visits of the Heads of the States

- President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev paid an official visit to Austria on 3-6 July 2010. President Ilham Aliyev paid one official (13.05.2013) and two working visits to Austria. The last visit was undertaken on 29 March 2019.

- President of the Republic of Austria visited Azerbaijan on 11 October 2011.

 

Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs

- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan paid 5 visits to Austria, the latest of which was undertaken by Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to Vienna on 6 June 2023.

- Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria paid 3 visits to Azerbaijan, the latest of which was undertaken by Minister Alexander Schallenberg on 25 June 2021.

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Austrian Inter-Parliamentary Relations has been functioning in the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan since 13th of December 2005. Chaired by Tahir Mirkishili MP, the group comprises 16 members.

The Austrian-South Caucasus bilateral parliamentary group (12 deputies) is functioning in the Austrian Parliament. Andreas Minnich (People’s Party of Austria) leads the parliamentary group.

 

Contractual and legal framework

41 bilateral agreements have been signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria.

 

Economic cooperation

"Joint Commission on cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Austria in the fields of economy, agriculture, industry, technique and technology" was set up in 1999. The 10th session of the Joint Commission was held on 16 May 2022 in Baku.

 

Austria – Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce was established in in 2009 in Vienna.

 

The Austrian Economic Chamber has established a representative office in Azerbaijan.
