The Kingdom of Belgium
Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Kingdom of Belgium
The Kingdom of Belgium recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 31 December 1991. The two countries established diplomatic relations on 17 June 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Kingdom of Belgium opened in 1995, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Azerbaijan was inaugurated in 2007.
Azerbaijan attaches importance to the development of relations with Belgium. Cooperation between the two countries covers political, economic and humanitarian fields.
Mutual visits of the Heads of the States
- President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev visited Belgium on 3 occasions (working visits) and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on 17 similar occasions. The visits were mainly undertaken within the framework of the EU and NATO. The last such visit took place on 15 July 2023. On 6 February 2017 and 13 May 2019, President Ilham Aliyev held meetings with King of Belgium Philippe during his visits to Brussels. The King of Belgium hasn’t paid a visit to Azerbaijan.
Mutual visits of the Prime Ministers
- Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dean paid an official visit to Azerbaijan on 13-15 April 1998.
Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan has visited Belgium on 20 occasions. These visits were mainly undertaken to attend meetings of the EU and NATO. The last such visit took place on 11-12 December 2023, during which Foreign Ministers of both countries held meetings. In general, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has held 6 meetings with his Belgian counterparts.
- Hadja Lahbib, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium, visited Azerbaijan on 24-25 August 2023 as part of her regional tour of the South Caucasus.
Inter-parliamentary relations
The Azerbaijan-Belgium Interparliamentary Working Group operates in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The head of the group is Kamal Jafarov.
A bilateral section of the Belgian Group on Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan operates under the Inter-Parliamentary Union in the Belgian Federal Parliament. The Section is chaired by Tim Vandenput.
