Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina

 

Bosnia and Herzegovina recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 9 February 1995, and on the same day diplomatic relations were established between the two countries.

 

The diplomatic representation of Azerbaijan in Bosnia and Herzegovina opened on 1 March 2011.

 

The Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Turkey is also accredited in Azerbaijan.

 

During the official visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the "Joint Declaration on strategic partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina" was signed on 13 April 2023.

 

Azerbaijan attaches importance to the development of relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and cooperation between the two countries covers political, economic and humanitarian spheres.

 

Mutual visits of the Heads of the States

- Chairmen of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina have made 8 working visits to Azerbaijan:

Mladen Ivanić: 12 June 2015 (I European Games), 10-12 March 2016 (IV Global Baku Forum), 23 February 2017 (V Global Baku Forum), 15-17 March 2018 (VI Global Baku Forum);

Sefik Caferovich: 14 – 16 March 2019 (VII Global Baku Forum), 3 November 2021 (VIII Global Baku Forum), 16 June 2022 (IX Global Baku Forum);

Jelka Tsvijanovic: 28 February-01 March 2023 (Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group Summit on COVID-19);

- On 13 April 2023, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid a one-day official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs

- Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina have made two official and two working visits to Azerbaijan:

Zlatko Lagumcija – 7 June 2013, official visit

Igor Tsrnadak – 1-2 December 2016, official visit and 3-6 April 2018, working visit

Bisera Turkovic – 23 December 2021, official visit

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

A working group on the Azerbaijan-Bosnia and Herzegovina inter-parliamentary relations has been established in the Milli Majlis. The parliamentary group is headed by Mazahir Efendiyev MP.

 

In the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BvH PA) for the convocation 2022-2026, the chairman of the inter-parliamentary friendship group for Eastern and Central Europe is Sredoje Nović MP.

 

- On 19 September 2018, Chairman of the House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mladen Bosic, visited Azerbaijan to participate in the special session of the Milli Majlis, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev.

- Bakir Izetbegovic, Chairman of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, paid an official visit to Azerbaijan on 9-11 June 2021.

 

Contractual and legal framework

7 bilateral agreements have been signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

Economic cooperation

Intergovernmental Commission has not been set up between Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
