Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Germany
Germany recognised the independence of Azerbaijan on 12 January 1992, followed by the establishment of diplomatic relations on 20 February 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Germany opened on 2 September 1992. The German Embassy in Azerbaijan opened on 22 September 1992.
There is steady dialogue between Azerbaijan and Germany, as well as broad cooperation is being implemented in economic and humanitarian areas.
Mutual visits of the Heads of the States
- President of the Republic of Azerbaijan has undertaken 17 official and working visits to Germany (President Heydar Aliyev: 01-04.07.1996; President Ilham Aliyev: 24-26.08.2004, 22-23.09.2006, 14-16.02.2007, 21-22.11.2009, 04-06.02.2010, 03-05.02.2012, 20-21.01.2015, 06-08.02.2015, 12-14.02.2016, 06-07.06.2016, 17-19.02.2017, 14-16.02.2020, 16-18.02.2023, 13-14.03.2023, 16-18.02.2024, 25-26.04.2024).

- Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan has paid a working visit (1) to Germany (Prime Minister A.Rasizade: 21-23.10.2000);
- Federal Chancellor of Germany has undertaken 1 (official) visit to Azerbaijan (Federal Chancellor A.Merkel: 25.08.2018).

- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan has visited Germany for 14 official and working visits (Minister E.Mammadyarov: 5-7.07.2006; 4-6.02.2008, 28-30.06.2010, 4-6.02.2011, 18-19.10.2012, 01-03.02.2013, 31.01-02.02.2014, 11.05.2016, 08-09.12.2016, 16-17.02.2018, 15-17.02.2019); Minister J.Bayramov: 28-29.03.2022, 16-18.02.2023, 28-29.02.2024);
- Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany has paid 8 official and working visits to Azerbaijan (Federal Minister K.Kinkel: 22.12.1995; Federal Minister Y.M.Fischer: 20-21.05.2001, 21-22.04.2004; Federal Minister F-V. Steinmeier: 19.02.2007; Federal Minister G.Westerwelle: 14-15.03.2012; Federal Minister F.-W.Steinmeier: 22-23.10.2014, 30.06.2016; Federal Minister A.Baerbok: 04.11.2023).
Inter-parliamentary relations
The Working group on inter-parliamentary relations between Azerbaijan and Germany (headed by Member of Parliament Nurlan Hasanov) is functioning in Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Germany-South Caucasus parliamentary group in the German Bundestag (Chaired by Dr. Johann David Wadephul, Christian-Democratic Union) works to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation with Azerbaijan.
- Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan has paid 2 visits to Germany (Speaker O.Asadov: 8-10.09.2019; Speaker Dr. S.Gafarova: 29-30.11.2023);
- Vice-President of the German Bundestag has paid a visit (1) to Azerbaijan (Vice-President K.Göring-Eckart: 18.07.2022).
Contractual and legal framework
77 bilateral agreements have been signed between Azerbaijan and Germany.
Economic cooperation
German-Azerbaijan High-level Working Group on Trade and Investmens was established on 5 May 2011.

The Working Group has held 9 sessions. The 1st session was held on 19-21 October 2023 in Berlin, and the last 9th on 10 February 2023 was organised in Berlin.
On 12 November 2012 the German-Azerbaijan Chamber on Foreign Trade was established.
