Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Bulgaria

 

The Republic of Bulgaria recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 14th of January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 5th of June 1992. Currently, relations between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria are developing steadily, with mutual interest in expanding co-operation between our countries.

 

The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Bulgaria was established in 2005. The Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Republic of Azerbaijan was established in 1999.

 

On the 3rd to the 5th of March 2015, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid an official visit to the Republic of Bulgaria.

 

On the 12th to the 14th of October 2017, the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr Rumen Radev, paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

 

On the 12th to the 14th of May 2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr Daniel Mitov, paid an official visit to Azerbaijan.

 

On the 30th to the 31st of October 2018, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid an official visit to the Republic of Bulgaria.

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

 

The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Bulgarian Inter-Parliamentary Relations was established in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan in December 2005. The group’s head is Rauf Aliyev, a member of the parliament.

Hamid Bari Hamid is the chairman of the Bulgarian-Azerbaijani Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 44th National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria.

 

Contractual and legal framework

 

In total, one hundred four documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria.

 

Economic co-operation

 

The main activity area in bilateral co-operation between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria is the energy sector. In 2019, trade turnover between the two countries increased significantly, and is now the highest in the last 4 years.

 

Goods exported from Azerbaijan to Bulgaria: agricultural products, crude oil, kerosene, liquefied gas.

Goods imported from Bulgaria to Azerbaijan: agricultural and food products, sweets, motor gasoline, medicines, cosmetics, tobacco raw materials and cigarette (rolling) paper, cotton products, ferrous metal products, and equipment.
