Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Albania

 

On the 4th of January 1992, the Albanian Republic recognized the independence of Azerbaijan. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 23rd of September 1993.

 

Nowadays, there is a steadily developing political dialogue between Azerbaijan and Albania; in 2016-2019, the current president of the Republic of Albania regularly participated in the Global Baku Forums organised by the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre. So did the former presidents of Albania, who were actively involved in the activities of the aforementioned Center.

 

On the 10th to the 11th of March 2016, the President of the Republic of Albania, Bujar Faik Nishani, was on a working visit to our country to participate in the 4th Global Baku Forum.

 

On the 15th to the 18th of March 2017, the President of the Republic of Albania, Bujar Faik Nishani, paid a working visit to our country to participate in the 5th Global Baku Forum.

 

On the 15th tot the 17th of March 2018, the President of the Republic of Albania, Ilir Rexhep Meta, was on a working visit to our country to participate in the 6th Global Baku Forum.

 

On the 14th to the 16th of March 2019, the President of the Republic of Albania, Ilir Rexhep Meta, paid a working visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the 7th Global Baku Forum.

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

 

The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Albanian Inter-Parliamentary Relations in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan is chaired by Etibar Aliyev, a member of the parliament.

 

The chairman of the Albanian-Azerbaijani Friendship Group in the Albanian Parliament is Mr Edmond Panariti, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Development of the Republic of Albania.

 

 

Contractual and legal framework

 

In total, eight documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Albania.

 

 

Economic co-operation

 

Trade relations between Azerbaijan and Albania revived in 2016-2017. In view of the great potential of economic and trade relations between the two countries, the parties believe it relevant to increase joint efforts to develop co-operation in this area.

The energy sector is one of the most important areas of co-operation between Azerbaijan and Albania, and hence, the implementation of the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) gas pipeline project is of strategic importance. At the same time, Albania is interested in the active participation of Azerbaijan in the country's energy infrastructure.
