Bilateral diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Hungary

Hungary recognized the independence of Azerbaijan on the 26th of December 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 27th of April 1992.

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Hungary was established on the 1st of September 2004.

The Embassy of Hungary in Azerbaijan was established on the 12th of January 2009.

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, paid a visit to Azerbaijan on 5-6 March 2016 and 14-15 October 2019.

The visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Hungary took place on 24 July 2017; 31 August 2017; and 20 September 2019.

Visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary to the Republic of Azerbaijan took place on 28 June 2016; 29 June 2018; 29 March 2019; 17 July 2020; and 10 March 2021.

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

 

The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Hungarian Inter-Parliamentary Relations has been established and operates in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The group has 14 members, and is chaired by Ali Huseynli, a member of the Milli Majlis.

The Hungarian-Azerbaijani Friendship Group (8 deputies) operates in the Hungarian Parliament. The leader of the group is Dr Farkas Gergely.

 

Contractual and legal framework

In total, forty-five documents were signed between the two countries.

Economic co-operation

 

Currently, there is a sustainable development of economic relations between Azerbaijan and Hungary. The Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership, which was signed between the two countries, and a number of other documents covering the economic domain, provide an important basis for further expansion of the economic co-operation between Azerbaijan and Hungary.

The Azerbaijan-Hungary Joint Intergovernmental Commission is an important mechanism for developing economic relations. The Azerbaijani side is co-chaired by Minister of Labour and Social Protection, Sahil Babayev, and the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Szijjártó Péter. So far, the Commission has held 7 meetings. The 7th meeting was held on the 14th of February 2020 in Budapest.
