Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic
Czechia (Czechoslovakia until December 31, 1992) recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on January 8, 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on January 27, 1993.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Czechia was established on October 31, 2005. The Embassy of Czechia in Azerbaijan was established on September 24, 2019.
By the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev dated August 12, 2013, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Azerbaijan was appointed in Czechia’s the city of Karlovy Vary.
On September 15, 2015, the "Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Czechia" was signed in Baku.
Azerbaijan attaches importance to the development of relations with the Republic of Czechia, and cooperation between the two countries covers political, economic and humanitarian spheres.
Mutual visits of the Heads of the States
- President of the Republic of Azerbaijan have made 5 visits to the Czech Republic. The last (working) visit was undertaken by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev on October 6-7, 2022.
- 2 official visits of the President of the Czech Republic to the Republic of Azerbaijan took place. The last visit was made by Milos Zeman on September 15-17, 2015.
Mutual visits of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan paid 3 visits to the Republic of Czechia. The last (official) visit was made on April 22-23, 2024.
- Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Czechia made 4 visits to the Republic of Azerbaijan. The last visit (working) was carried out by Yakub Kulhanek on 29-01 September-October 2021.
Inter-parliamentary relations
A working group on the Azerbaijan-Czechia inter-parliamentary relations has been set up in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The parliamentary group is headed by Elnur Allahverdiyev MP.
A working group on the Czechia-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary relations has been set up in the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament. The parliamentary groups is headed by Jan Kubik.
- The chairman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan has made 2 official visits to the Republic of Czechia. The last visit was made by Speaker Sahiba Gafarova on November 30 - December 2, 2023.
- The Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Czechia has visited Azerbaijan three times. The last (official) visit was made by Radek Vondracek on May 16, 2019.
Contractual and legal framework
30 bilateral agreements have been signed between Azerbaijan and Czechia.
Economic cooperation
"Joint Commission on economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Czechia" was established in 2011. The co-chairs of the commission are Sahib Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Economy from Azerbaijan, and Petr Trešnak, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade from the Republic of Czechia. The commission has held five meetings, the last of which took place on March 3, 2023 in Prague.
In 2023, the Republic of Czechia became the 6th largest trade partner of Azerbaijan in Europe (14th in the world) and the 5th largest export destination (10th in the world). As of January 1, 2024, 33 commercial institutions from Czechia (representing sectors such as industry, transport, construction, trade, service) are registered in Azerbaijan, 20 of them are currently active.
