No:436/24, Response by Aykhan Hajizada, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the media inquiry on Jordan’s withdrawal of the film produced by an Armenian director against Azerbaijan from the “Oscar” nomination
Question: According to the news disseminated by some Armenian media, despite the Royal Film Commission of Jordan has selected Armenian director Sarin Hayrapetyan's film “My Sweet Land” to be submitted to the “Oscar” award in the nomination “Best Foreign Film” in 2025, later, due to “diplomatic pressure” of Azerbaijan on the Jordanian side, it was withdrawn from the “Oscar” nomination. How would you comment this news?
Answer: Although this September the film “My Sweet Land” directed by Jordanian-Armenian Sarin Hayrapetyan was selected to be submitted for 2025 “Oscar” “Best Foreign Film” nomination, considering that the film is against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani side have immediately conveyed concerns to the Jordanian side.
Contrary to the claim of the Armenian side, there is no question of any pressure here. It was the independent decision of the Jordanian Royal Film Commission not to submit the film for the “Oscar” award and to stop the screening of the film in Jordan. We welcome this decision of the Jordanian side.
