On 29 July 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia of the United Nations Development Coordination Office, Gwi-Yeop Son.

During the meeting, issues on the existing cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and various specialized agencies of the United Nations, as well as preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan has maintained fruitful cooperation with the United Nations, particularly its specialized agencies, for many years. It was emphasized that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hold a special place in the cooperation agenda, and that Azerbaijan, as one of the few countries, voluntarily submits regular reports on the implementation of the sustainable development agenda, which demonstrates the importance Azerbaijan attach to this direction. It was noted that humanitarian demining, as one of the most significant security challenges in the post-conflict period, has been declared the 18th National Sustainable Development Goal, and considering the relevance of this issue for many countries, this initiative is continuously promoted within the United Nations framework.

It was highlighted that Azerbaijan has long promoted efforts to combat climate change and protect the environment, and that the application of green technologies, including “smart village” and “smart city” concepts in the large-scale reconstruction works in the liberated territories, serves as a clear example of this commitment.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that the current year is marked by Azerbaijan’s COP29 presidency and expressed satisfaction with the further expansion of cooperation with the United Nations in this direction. It was emphasized that, like all our efforts in addressing global challenges, our COP29 presidency is aimed at ensuring an inclusive and result-oriented process.

It was also noted that Azerbaijan will host the World Urban Forum and World Environment Day in 2026.

The other side emphasized that despite the limited time for preparation for Azerbaijan’s COP29 presidency, the results achieved so far are commendable.

It was highlighted that the United Nations welcomes Azerbaijan’s active participation in promoting strong multilateralism, as well as its innovative and creative approach. Within this process, the importance of keeping the regional impacts of climate change, particularly risks related to water resources, at the center of attention was emphasized.

During the meeting, an exchange of views was also held on other issues of mutual interest.
