On 21 March 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov participated and delivered a speech at the Nuclear Energy Summit held for the first time within the framework of his working visit to the Kingdom of Belgium.

During the speech, issues of our country’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were touched upon, and our country’s position on the subject of the event was brought to attention.

In the speech, it was noted that the inclusion of nuclear energy as one of the methods “to reduce greenhouse gas emissions” in the Global Stocktake report within the framework of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is an important result of global efforts aimed at the safe use of nuclear energy.

In this direction, it was brought to attention that the activities of the IAEA aimed at studying the environmental impacts of nuclear energy, including initiatives such as “Atoms4Climate”, are commendable.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, referring to the future prospects of technical cooperation with the IAEA in the field of the use of nuclear technologies, spoke about the importance of the next “Country Programme Framework” document envisaged for the Republic of Azerbaijan in the field of Technical Cooperation with the IAEA, which is at the stage of completion in this direction.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, providing detailed information on Azerbaijan’s experience in the use of nuclear technologies at the national level, brought to attention that together with the IAEA we are working on exploring the possibility of applying nuclear technology in the field of combating the mine threat, which is one of the most important challenges for our country. It was emphasized that our priority in this field is to pay special attention to nuclear safety while exploring the possibilities of using nuclear energy.

It was brought to attention that within the framework of our COP29 chairmanship, while promoting the mobilization of resources for accessible use of nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes in combating climate change, we will also keep the nuclear safety factor at the forefront.

Confidence was expressed that the possible contribution of the IAEA to the efforts in these directions will play an important role.
