Relations between Azerbaijan and UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)

On the 31st of July 1992, Azerbaijan became a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Given that Azerbaijan has high-level political relations with most UNESCAP member countries, UNESCAP is an important platform for advancing our interests in the region in areas such as transport, information and communication technologies, trade and energy, investment and innovations, environment, social development, statistics, disaster reduction, etc. Relevant Azerbaijani agencies regularly participate in the work of a number of sectoral working groups and committees of UNESCAP. A series of UNESCAP workshops have so far been held in Azerbaijan.

On 2-3 February 2016, UNESCAP Executive Secretary, Mrs Shamshad Akhtar, paid a visit to Azerbaijan. During her visit, Mrs Akhtar held high-level meetings to discuss opportunities for expanding relations between Azerbaijan and UNESCAP.

The draft resolution Strengthening Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Energy Development in Asia and the Pacific, initiated by Azerbaijan, was adopted unanimously at the 73rd annual session of UNESCAP in Bangkok on 15-19 May 2017.

On the 26th of April 2021, a video-message from the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, was played at the 77th session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific on the theme “Building back better from crises through regional cooperation in Asia and the Pacific”.
