Relations between Azerbaijan and the League of Arab States (LAS)

The League of Arab States (LAS) acts on the basis of its Charter which came into force on the 11th of May 1945. The LAS’s central decision-making body is the Arab League Council that meets at the level of foreign ministers of LAS member states twice a year. Secretary-General of the Arab League is elected by the Council for a term of 5 years.

Representations and information bureaus of the Arab League operate in Türkiye, Russia, France, the UK, Germany, Spain, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Canada, the US, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Iraq, China, India, Kenya, Senegal and Ethiopia.

The Arab League co-operates on the basis of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed with seven countries, including Azerbaijan.

On the 15th to the 17th of October 2005, then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid an official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

On the 16th of October 2005, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the League of Arab States.

On the 6th to the 8th of May 2007, during his official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, met with then Secretary General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, at the League’s Headquarters and addressed the ambassadors of LAS member states and took part in a press conference together with Mr Moussa.

From the 30th of August to the 10th of September 2007, Admiral Mahmoud Hatim Al-Kady, President of the Arab Federation of Chambers of Shipping (AFCS) under the Council of the Arab Economic Unity, which was created by the League of Arab States, paid a visit to Azerbaijan.

Mrs Omnia M. Taha, Director of the European Department of the League of Arab States, participated in the International Conference “GUAM Development Strategy” held in Baku on the 29th to the 30th of May 2008.

On the 13th of May 2014, the Forum on Economy and Arab Cooperation with the Central Asian States and the Republic of Azerbaijan was held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Azerbaijan was represented at the forum by a delegation led by then Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

By Order No1862 dated the 7th of March 2016 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Tural Rzayev was appointed Permanent Observer of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the League of Arab States.

On the 27th of September 2019, then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, met with the Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS), Ahmed Aboul Al-Gheit, within the framework of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.
