Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

 

Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Venezuela were established on the 12th of May 1995. The Venezuelan Embassy was officially opened in Baku on the 3rd of February 2018, before commencing its work on the 1st of June the same year.

On the 10th of October 2016, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, met during the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul.

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, N. Maduro, officially visited our country on the 21st to the 22nd of October 2016 and on the 25th to the 26th of October 2019.

On the 13th to the 18th of September 2016, then-Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, was on a working visit to Venezuela to attend the next Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement.

 

Contractual and legal framework

In total, three documents were signed between the two countries.

 

Economic co-operation

In 2020, trade turnover of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reached US$2.67K (Import: US$2.67K. Export: US$0K)

Products exported from Azerbaijan to Venezuela: finish hardware and fittings made of base metal.

Given that Azerbaijan and Venezuela are both oil producing and exporting countries, co-operation in this area has great potential. The Azerbaijani (SOCAR), Venezuelan and Belarusian sides have agreed to swap supplies in 2010, and according to this agreement, SOCAR delivered 5 million tons of crude oil to Belarus in 2011.
