Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with the delegation headed by Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov stated that UNFPA remains one the key international humanitarian partners for Azerbaijan and particularly appreciated the activity of UNFPA’s Office in Baku in strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation. Pointing out the importance of visits in defining new directions of relations, Elmar Mammadyarov noted that Azerbaijan looks forward to further expanding cooperation by adding new dimensions like education and information communication technologies to the cooperation framework. He also mentioned that the Memorandum of Understanding between ADA University and UNFPA could be an excellent starting point to this end.

Talking about impressive results of integration policy of UN’s development goals into its national targets, Minister Mammadyarov said that in recognition of Azerbaijan’s outstanding achievements in implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, Azerbaijan received the 2015 South-South Award.

Elmar Mammadyarov underlined that Azerbaijan is interested in cooperation with UNFPA in practical realization of Human Rights Council’s recommendations and attracting the international attention to the issue related IDP community, which emerged as a result of Armenia’s aggression policy against Azerbaijan.

Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin informed Minister about the meetings held in Baku and mentioned that he was honored to present the award in recognition of H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev’s, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan tireless activities and tremendous efforts towards fulfilling the tasks set by the UN International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994.

Furthermore, Babatunde Osotimehin said that Azerbaijan’s development model is being shown significant results in humanitarian field as well. He also added that given stable population growth and relatively young population structure would give promising results of capital investment on human potential.

Expressing his satisfaction on relationship with the Government of Azerbaijan, Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin expressed the readiness in further expanding the ties.

At the meeting the issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
