No:443/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration

On 13 November 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration, within the framework of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit of the 29th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

 

At the meeting, an exchange of views was conducted on prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the International Organization for Migration in various directions, as well as partnership opportunities within the framework of our COP29 Presidency.

 

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov provided detailed information on our country’s COP29 Presidency and the negotiation process conducted, and stressed that we closely cooperate with the United Nations and its specialized agencies within the framework of taking over the Presidency, as well as preparatory works for the session. The importance of this choice made by our country in terms of coordinating efforts to combat climate change and ensuring continuity was emphasized.

 

It was stated that Azerbaijan, as a country exposed to the impacts of climate change, had placed issues of environmental protection at the center of our national development strategy long before our COP29 Presidency, and that within the framework of our Presidency, we intend to contribute to global efforts in this direction.

 

Director General Amy Pope congratulated our country on taking over the COP29 Presidency and wished success in its activities during the Presidency.

 

Taking into account that many people migrate as a result of climate change, it was noted that in this regard, the main focus of the Organization is the adaptation of those people and support for eliminating the damage caused to them. In this regard, the importance of our Presidency putting forward the priority of climate finance in terms of contributing to finding solutions to such issues was noted.

 

During the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
