On 24 September 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, within the framework of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, unanimity was expressed that cultural and religious commonalities between Azerbaijan and Iran are one of the main factors for the development of relations between the countries, and the importance of regular contacts between the relevant institutions, as well as officials, of the two countries in terms of the sustainability of our bilateral relations was emphasized.
Based on the existence of strong political will on both sides for the development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations, Azerbaijan’s full commitment to cooperation based on good-neighborliness, equality, mutual respect and benefit was highlighted, and the importance of the efforts of Azerbaijan in the direction of continuing and further developing this cooperation was emphasized.
The importance of the activities of the State Commission on Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran in intensifying cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran in various directions, including in the fields of economy, trade, transport and communications, and in identifying projects of mutual interest was emphasized.
It was underlined that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which Azerbaijan will host, creates additional opportunities for Azerbaijan-Iran cooperation.
The other side was informed in detail about the process of normalization of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations.
It was emphasized that the most serious obstacle to the conclusion of a final peace agreement is the continuation of territorial claims against Azerbaijan in a number of legal and political documents of this country, primarily the Constitution of Armenia.
Against the background of continuing revanchist tendencies in Armenia, it was stressed that the rapid militarization of Armenia and the increase of military support to Armenia by various states harm our efforts to establish security and stability in the region.
During the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
