On 23 September 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, participated and delivered remarks at the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on the theme “Protection of civilians during armed conflicts: solidarity with the Palestinian people,” held within the framework of the high-level week of the 79th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the role of the Non-Aligned Movement in safeguarding justice and the rule of law in international relations, as well as the importance of prompt and adequate coordination of the efforts of NAM member states against the backdrop of increasing threats and challenges to global peace, security, and development.
It was noted that during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement from 2019 to 2023, the country spared no effort to enhance the effectiveness of the Movement and strengthen solidarity within it, and put forward a number of concrete initiatives to that end.
It was highlighted that Azerbaijan, as an active member of the NAM Troika, remains committed to further strengthening the Movement’s global role and influence. The Kampala Summit held earlier this year was described as an important opportunity to review the progress achieved within the Movement and to advance the objectives outlined in its final documents.
It was noted that the Palestinian issue remains one of the key items on the NAM agenda and that the Movement’s position on this issue is reflected in numerous documents adopted by its various bodies.
It was also emphasized that the Non-Aligned Movement has expressed concern over violations of international humanitarian conventions and human rights law in the Israel–Palestine conflict zone, and has called for the cessation of military operations against civilians and for fair treatment of victims.
It was stated that Azerbaijan’s position on this issue remains unchanged and is based on the norms and principles of international law, as well as the relevant resolutions of the United Nations.
In conclusion, hope was expressed for the establishment of peace and security across all regions of the world for the sake of sustainable development and progress, and it was underlined that common goals can be achieved through strengthening joint efforts and solidarity within the Non-Aligned Movement.
