No:262/22, Information of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens from Syria
In the period from May 25 to May 28, 2022, 11 citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan were repatriated, including 9 children and 2 women, who were held in the Amerna camp in the city of Jarabulus of the Syrian Arab Republic. Among the repatriates, 2 sisters, aged 6 and 9, lost both parents.
The above-mentioned persons were brought to our country as a result of step-by-step and coordinated measures taken by the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Thus, first of all, the location, identity and citizenship of the citizens to be repatriated were determined. Then, on the basis of the agreement reached, their transit through the territory of the Republic of Türkiye was ensured.
In this regard, representatives of the relevant government agencies sent to the Republic of Türkiye, which are members of the working group responsible for the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens from Iraq and the Syrian Arab Republic, they conducted an initial medical and psychological examination of the repatriates and provided them with the necessary assistance. Later, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Türkiye provided our citizens with a "Certificate of return to the Republic of Azerbaijan" and flight tickets.
On May 28, 2022, the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan accompanied by the delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan were repatriated to the Republic of Azerbaijan on the Ankara-Baku flight. They will be handed over to their families and guardians after the appropriate procedures are completed.
The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan intends to take all necessary measures for the reintegration and rehabilitation of relevant persons.
Along with the joint and coordinated activities of the relevant state bodies of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the implementation of repatriation, the assistance provided by the Republic of Türkiye should be especially noted.
The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan will continue to take necessary measures to protect the rights and freedoms of our citizens in difficult situations abroad and in need of assistance in accordance with national legislation and international agreements to which our country is a party.
