On 2 May 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition, Selwin Hart, who is on a visit to our country to participate in the 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue.

During the meeting, preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the ongoing negotiation process, as well as issues of cooperation were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that despite being a country rich in hydrocarbon resources, Azerbaijan has voluntarily chosen the path of transition to alternative energy at the national level, and is now determined to demonstrate its contribution to these efforts at the international level within the framework of COP29.

In this regard, it was emphasized that a number of important meetings and events have already been held, and that it is essential to ensure the continuity of such contacts with various partners, including the United Nations.

Providing detailed information on the negotiation process within the framework of COP29, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that despite differing approaches among various parties, the recognition of the importance of reaching consensus is a positive indicator.

The importance of raising awareness on climate change issues was also emphasized during the meeting.

Special Adviser Selwin Hart noted that despite the limited time for preparations and the complexity of the presidency priorities, the organization of the process within a short period of time, as well as the establishment of the “Troika” format to ensure coordination with other presidencies, is commendable. It was also noted that the start of COP29 coincides with the period when countries will determine their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), making COP29 a good opportunity in this regard.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest related to cooperation in combating climate change.
