No:185/25, Press release on the meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq Fuad Hussein

On 7 May 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, within the framework of his official visit to the Republic of Iraq, met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of this country Fuad Hussein.
The one-on-one meeting between the ministers was later continued in an expanded format with the participation of delegations from both sides.
During the expanded meeting, issues on the bilateral and regional cooperation agenda between the two countries were discussed, in particular the prospects of partnership in the fields of economy, trade, energy, transport, communications, science, culture, education, and tourism, as well as the regional and global situation.
The existing historical friendship and brotherly relations between Azerbaijan and Iraq, as well as cultural and traditional closeness between the peoples, and their role in the development of relations were highlighted. The importance of high-level contacts and visits, as well as the mechanism of political consultations in further expanding cooperation, was noted.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov drew attention to the importance of existing cooperation mechanisms between the two countries, particularly the Intergovernmental Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation and the Azerbaijan–Iraq Business Council, and emphasized the importance of utilizing the prospects for the development of bilateral economic relations, especially in the fields of energy and mutual investments.
At the meeting, where cooperation within regional and international organizations, including the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), was discussed, the importance of continuing mutual support demonstrated within multilateral platforms was also noted.
Cooperation in the humanitarian and education fields was discussed, and the usefulness of scholarship programs for students from member states of the OIC and the Non-Aligned Movement, including the Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant Program, was emphasized.
Within the framework of the visit, it was also noted that the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between ADA University and the Diplomatic Service Institute of the Republic of Iraq is a landmark event in expanding cooperation in the field of education.
During the meeting, regional and international security issues, the situation in the Middle East, the India-Pakistan tension, as well as the realities in our region in the post-conflict period, and our country’s efforts in reconstruction, demining, and peacebuilding were discussed in detail.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on other current issues on the agenda and matters of mutual interest.
Later, the ministers made statements on the outcomes of the meeting at a press conference organized with the participation of media representatives.
