No:178/22, Information of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the dissemination of a written statement on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Network within the framework of the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council

A written statement of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Youth Network was issued within the framework of the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) which took place from February 28 to April 1, 2022.

The statement praised the important role of the HRC in promoting and protecting human rights, emphasizing the need for all UN member states to fulfill their obligations to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

The statement calls for the eradication of poverty, access to quality education and health services, equitable access to vaccines against the COVID-19 virus in all countries, the right to food, ensuring all human rights and fundamental freedoms of persons with disabilities on an equal basis, sustainable solutions for IDPs, including ensuring their safe and dignified return on a voluntary basis and restoring violated human rights, as well as the right to live in a healthy environment.

It also strongly condemns all forms of manifestation of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, emphasizes the importance of the efforts of all countries to promote a dialogue of civilizations, cultures and religions, expresses concern over gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms as a result of acts of terrorism and violent extremism, as well as condemns all forms and manifestations of such acts.

The statement calls on all countries and the wider international community to support the effective work of the HRC, without politicizing issues and without resorting to double standards and a selective approach.

The submission of the written statement to the HRC is the first activity of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Network within the framework of high-level UN political events.

It should be noted that the foundation of the Youth Network, which unites youth organizations and young activists of the Non-Aligned Movement member states, was laid at the inaugural meeting held on October 4-5, 2021 within the framework of Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement. The creation of the youth structure of the Non-Aligned Movement, which has a 60-year history, has become a significant event.
