No:147/18, Joint Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan

On June 7, 2018 the elections for the membership of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) had been held on the sidelines of the 20th Meeting of States parties of the United Nations Commission on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in New York City.

As a result of the promotion campaign conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs and the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, the nominee of Azerbaijan who is the representative of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs gained a vote of 143 states and was elected to the Committee for the years of 2019-2022.

The nominations from 16 states (Azerbaijan, Peru, Japan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, Algeria, Montenegro, Egypt, Georgia, Mauritius, Kingdom of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Bulgaria, Togo, Afghanistan and Burkina Faso) has been put forward for 12 vacancies in the Committee.

Although at least two-third of votes of member states of Convention - namely 126 states were required to be elected, Azerbaijan’s candidate won 143 votes.

The members of the Committee are composed of 23 independent experts, specializing in women's rights who are elected for terms of four years by the secret ballot by State parties to the Convention.

We express our gratitude to all the member states that supported the nominee of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Election of the candidate of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the mentioned Committee with a large majority of votes is a sign of high confidence to Azerbaijan by the member states.

We also congratulate Peru, Japan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Egypt, Georgia, the Republic of Mauritius, the Kingdom of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Bulgaria and Burkina Faso that has been elected to the Committee along with Azerbaijan.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women fulfills the implementation of the provisions of the Convention to the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
