06 March 2026 15:44

On March 6, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, who is visiting Azerbaijan.

The meeting began with a tête-à-tête session between Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Minister Mihai Popșoi and was subsequently continued in an expanded format with the participation of delegations from both sides.

During the meetings, the dynamics of strategic partnership relations between Azerbaijan and Moldova were discussed, the importance of continuing bilateral political dialogue was emphasized, and opportunities to expand cooperation in economic, energy, alternative energy, transport, and humanitarian fields were examined.

The promotion of mutual investments, strengthening ties between business communities, and more efficient utilization of regional transport and logistics opportunities were highlighted. Within this framework, the Moldovan side was invited to benefit from the opportunities provided by Azerbaijan’s free economic zones.

In the humanitarian sphere, the continuation of cooperation in culture, science, and education, as well as the importance of student exchanges, were emphasized. Projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in Gagauzia were noted with appreciation. Additionally, the existence of direct flight connections, growing people-to-people ties, and factors positively influencing the tourism sector were highlighted.

Cooperation within international and regional organizations was discussed, with satisfaction expressed regarding joint actions based on mutual respect and support within the UN, OSCE, the European Political Community, GUAM, and other multilateral platforms.

Regional security issues, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the situation in the Middle East were also touched on during the meeting.

Serious concern over the escalating military tensions in the Middle East was underscored. The drone attacks carried out by Iran on March 5, 2026, targeting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, which caused damage to civilian infrastructure—including the airport terminal and a school building—and injuries to civilians, were once again condemned as unacceptable.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also briefed his counterpart on the process of normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the reconstruction and rehabilitation work in the liberated territories, and the return of former internally displaced persons.

Within the framework of the visit, the 2026–2027 Consultation Plan between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova was signed by the Ministers.

Following the meetings, a joint press conference was held, during which the ministers made statements on the outcomes of the discussions and responded to journalists’ questions.
