Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt within his official visit

 At the meeting, the sides expressed their satisfaction with the level of bilateral relationship and comprehensive cooperation in various fields between Azerbaijan and Egypt. Noting that historical and traditional friendly relations exist between our countries, they stressed the importance of making joint efforts to further strengthen this relationship. In this regard, it was mentioned that the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries will be celebrated next year.

Minister Elmar Mammadyarov stated that the cooperation between Azerbaijan and Egypt is successfully developing in political, economic, energy, education, culture and humanitarian spheres. Noting that the two countries have also great potential for expansion of cooperation in tourism, pharmaceutical, ICT, agriculture and textile sectors, he underlined the importance of further development of the economic agenda.

Talking about the enhancement of cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy, the sides noted that the beneficial relationship between SOCAR and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) has been established for more than 6 years.

They expressed their conviction that the meeting of the Joint Inter-Governmental Commission to be held in late November will contribute to the enhancement of bilateral cooperation in various spheres. 

Minister Elmar Mammadyarov noted the importance of close relations and mutual fruitful cooperation between the two countries in the framework of international organizations, particularly the UN, OIC and Non-Aligned Movement.

Saying that Egypt has an important role in Arab and Islamic world, Minister E.Mammadyarov stressed the necessity of strengthening the Islamic solidarity through joint efforts. In this regard, he talked about the importance of the IV Islamic Solidarity Games which will be held in our country next year. 

Informing his colleague on the latest status of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, Elmar Mammadyarov underscored that according to the norms and principles of international law and in compliance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council the conflict has to be only settled on the basis of territorial integrity, sovereignty and internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan. He added that Armenia attempts to undermine the negotiation process by pursuing destructive policy and resorting to the acts of provocations. E.Mammadyarov also stated that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries at the level of heads of state declared the fact of unacceptability and unsustainability of the current status-quo. He stressed that the attempts to change the internationally recognized borders of states by use force is unacceptable.

Minister Sameh Shoukry emphasized that this visit contributes to the further development of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Egypt. He also noted that Egypt shares the interest in expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan in all spheres. Adding that the meeting of the Joint Inter-Governmental Commission to be held in November has a great importance in this regard.

Noting that a number of projects related to the development and expansion of the Suez Canal are being implemented in Egypt, S.Shoukry invited Azerbaijan to take advantage of logistic opportunities to this end.

S.Shoukry pointed out that the stance of Egypt on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict remains principal and in this context Egypt supports the international legitimacy and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council on the conflict. He emphasized that Egypt wishes the sustainable peace and security would be established in the region of South Caucasus.

Furthermore, Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said that Egypt’s support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan and its stance on the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict through negotiations mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs in compliance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council is appreciated. 

During the meeting, the issues such as inter-parliamentary cooperation, promotion of relations in cultural and educational fields, increasing ties among business circles of the two countries were also discussed in an open and amicable atmosphere.
