No:180/26, Press release on a high-level event on peace and climate resilience held within the framework of the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)

On 22 April, a high-level event on peace and climate resilience took place in the city of Bangkok within the framework of the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

At the event convened under the motto “Leaving no one behind” with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UNESCAP Secretariat, ministers of small island developing states, high-level state representatives and representatives of international organizations delivered speeches.

Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elshad Iskandarov, speaking as the keynote speaker at the event, emphasized that special attention and care are given by our country to small island states upon the instruction of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev.

The Ambassador noted that the historic decisions adopted in the field of climate finance at COP29 under Azerbaijan’s leadership are of particular importance primarily for these countries that are vulnerable to climate change.

The speaker, stating that our country provides international technical assistance, climate resilience and capacity-building support to small island states, spoke about the cooperation plans of the Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub (Baku Hub), which is one of the successful initiatives of the COP29 Azerbaijan Presidency, with small island countries in the current year.

At the event, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Tonga, as well as government representatives of Maldives, Tuvalu, Marshall Islands, Fiji, Micronesia and Samoa, highly appreciated our country’s leadership in addressing global challenges and expressed their gratitude to the leadership of Azerbaijan for the support and attention shown to their countries.

At the same time, it was noted that the successful climate initiatives contributing to peace, put forward within the framework of the Baku Hub platform, which is one of the important initiatives of COP29, create significant opportunities for countries vulnerable to climate risks in terms of deepening international cooperation and mobilizing sustainable financing mechanisms. Within this framework, representatives of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands addressed applications in order to cooperate with the Baku Hub.

Emphasizing the importance of this event, which is the first high-level dialogue of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship within the framework of the 82nd session of UNESCAP, Deputy Executive Secretary of UNESCAP Li Yong and the representative of IOM, in their speeches, expressed support of the organizations they represent for concrete initiatives implemented under Azerbaijan’s leadership in the fields of climate resilience and sustainable development for small island states.
