No:114/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Ruven Menikdiwela

On 14 March 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Ruven Menikdiwela, who is on a visit to our country to participate in the XI Global Baku Forum.

During the meeting, issues arising from cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as well as the current situation in the region were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted the importance of joint projects implemented with UNHCR aimed at eliminating the humanitarian consequences of the former Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and improving the living conditions of our citizens who became refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan.

The counterpart was informed about the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period, as well as the restoration and reconstruction works carried out in the territories liberated from occupation.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, noting that the “Great Return” program aimed at ensuring the dignified return of our citizens to the territories liberated from occupation is one of the main priorities for our country, brought to attention that we are interested in continuing cooperation with UNHCR in a number of directions.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also informed the other side about the preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and stated that it is possible to organize a number of joint events with UNHCR within the framework of COP29.

Ruven Menikdiwela, noting that Azerbaijan is one of the exemplary countries in addressing the refugee and internally displaced persons issue, brought to attention that UNHCR is ready to provide possible support in the current post-conflict period in the context of the return of internally displaced persons.

During the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
