Relations between Azerbaijan and UNDP

In Azerbaijan, the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, has been operating for more than 20 years. In accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 72/279 on the repositioning of the UN Development System, from 2019, as in other UN member states, the UNDP Office in Azerbaijan is governed by a separate Resident Representative.

The UNDP activities in Azerbaijan initially focused on the provision of early recovery programme, especially to those affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Over time, UNDP’s role in Azerbaijan has shifted toward longer-term socio-economic development in line with the country’s evolving needs. Main activities of UNDP in Azerbaijan:

  • Good governance and sustainable development, including youth promotion and women’s rights.
  • Promotion of e-government programme.
  • Sustainable energy and environment: solid waste management, sustainable energy, renewable energy, environmental assessment and climate change control, elimination of climate change risks in flood-prone areas.
  • Improving economic governance: developing employment skills, supporting private sector participation in sustainable development and creating an integrated border management for trade development.
  • Gender equality and empowerment of young people: participation of women living in rural areas, and rural areas in economic and social life, capacity building of national participants to represent women’s needs in public policy, teaching human development courses in Azerbaijani universities to increase youth awareness of future development issues, mobilization of young people to participate in the decision-making process and contribute to the achievement of environmental sustainability goals.
  • Supporting our country’s contribution to South-South co-operation for sharing knowledge in such areas as pension reforms, demining activities and service to citizens, where Azerbaijan has a great experience.
  • Contributing to the work done by the Government of Azerbaijan to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNDP’s current activities in the country are based on the Country Programme Document for Azerbaijan for 2021-2025.
