No:298/19, Statement by H.E. Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov, MFA of Azerbaijan at the Annual Coordination Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the OIC Member States
Statement by H.E. Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the Annual Coordination Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States
27 September 2019, New York
Distinguished colleagues,
Ladies and gentlemen,
At the outset, I would like to thank Mr. Chairman, Dr. Gargash and the OIC Secretary-General, Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen for organizing this meeting.
Mr. Chairman,
Azerbaijan is deeply concerned over wars and armed conflicts in different parts of the world that lead to greater security challenges, political instability, large-scale displacement, and unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
Recent developments in Jammu and Kashmir, in this regard, cause serious concerns. Azerbaijan, as a responsible member of the international community supports the peaceful resolution of Jammu and Kashmir issue in accordance with the norms and principles of international law and the relevant UN SC resolutions, as well as with full respect to the international humanitarian law.
I would like also to reiterate that Azerbaijan consistently stands for the two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.
We also express our hope that the rights of Rohingya Muslims to return to their native places in safety and dignity will be realized soon.
Regretfully this time either, I will not be able to give you good news on the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The recent provocative statements by high-level officials of Armenia, glorifying the results of the conflict, distorting the aim of the negotiation process, and even threatening with a “new war for new territories” prove that Armenia’s current government continues the irresponsible path to blatantly violate the norms and principles of international law.
In light of Armenia’s irresponsible behavior, the future of the peaceful negotiations resides in the ability, willingness, and determination of the international community, including the Islamic Ummah, to act promptly and resolutely on this matter of deep concern.
We commend, therefore, the activities of the OIC Contact Group on the aggression of the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan and express our warm gratitude to the Member States of the Group for their continued commitment to its objectives. We attach utmost importance to the activities of the Contact Group as a useful mechanism for reviewing the implementation by the OIC Member States of the OIC resolutions on the conflict and elaborating practical steps to that effect.
Thank you.
