The 4th International Conference on Financing for Development is being held in the city of Seville, Kingdom of Spain.
At the event, our country is represented by the head of the Azerbaijani delegation, Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov.
Within the framework of the conference, on 1 and 2 July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan organized high-level discussions on international development assistance and climate finance.
On 1 July, an event titled “New Development Partners: Strengthening South-South Cooperation to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” was held at the initiative of the Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, co-organized with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), and in partnership with the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The event featured discussions on topics such as the role of new and inclusive cooperation models in achieving the SDGs and responding more effectively to global challenges.
The importance of the work carried out at the international level by new development partners such as Azerbaijan in achieving the SDGs, as well as opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of such efforts through closer coordination and cooperation, was highlighted.
Attention was also drawn to the potential role of the international Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub (“Baku Hub”), established at Azerbaijan’s initiative during COP29, in facilitating the exchange of experience and knowledge in development assistance between the Global North and the Global South.
On 2 July, a special event titled “Implementing COP29 Financial Outcomes: Climate Action for Sustainable Development” was organized.
In his opening remarks, COP29 President and Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, Mukhtar Babayev, emphasized the importance of climate finance and, in this context, the historic decisions adopted at COP29. He noted that the COP29 Presidency will continue to contribute successfully to global climate action.
Subsequently, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elshad Iskandarov highlighted the critical role of climate finance for climate-vulnerable and conflict-affected countries and provided information about the “Baku Hub,” which works to increase international assistance and climate financing for such countries.
The Global Conference is held once every ten years. This year’s event is organized with the participation of 164 states and 49 international organizations.
