No:237/25, Press release on the first political consultations with Canada

On 10 June, the first political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Canada were held in the city of Baku. The Azerbaijani delegation was headed by the Head of the Americas Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmira Jafarova, and the Canadian delegation was headed by the Acting Director General of the Eastern Europe and Eurasia Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andreas Weichert.

 

During the consultations, an exchange of views was held on the prospects for the development of political relations between the two countries, and the importance of mutual visits and contacts within the framework of international events to promote sustainable political dialogue was emphasized. The importance of refraining from actions and steps that create tension in bilateral relations was also highlighted.

 

In the context of economic cooperation, possibilities for increasing bilateral trade turnover, as well as for implementing joint projects in areas such as energy, transport, high technologies and other fields were discussed. Particular attention was paid to the successful cooperation with the Canadian side within the framework of COP29. The strategic role of our country in the implementation of major energy, transport and logistics projects initiated and actively participated in by Azerbaijan was highly appreciated. At the same time, it was noted that cooperation in the fields of education, culture and tourism will make an important contribution to strengthening people-to-people contacts.

 

During the meeting, detailed information was also provided on the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period, the Azerbaijan–Armenia normalization process and the factors hindering this process, the steps taken by our country to ensure sustainable peace, as well as the mine problem in the liberated territories and the large-scale reconstruction and rebuilding works carried out there.

 

In conclusion, the sides exchanged views on regional and international agenda issues of mutual interest.
