No:158/22, Information of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić
On April 4, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) Marija Pejčinović Burić, during her visit to Azerbaijan.
The sides exchanged views on the current state and prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov reviewed Azerbaijan's 21-year cooperation with the Council of Europe, noting that 65 agreements have been signed and ratified so far, and 7 additional agreements have been signed. The importance of reciprocal cooperation within the previous Action Plans between the Council of Europe and Azerbaijan, as well as the new Action Plan for 2022-2025, developed on the basis of Azerbaijan's needs and recommendations of the Council of Europe and forming a common framework for cooperation, were emphasized.
Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić said she was visiting the country for the first time in the capacity of Secretary General of the Council of Europe and met with the President within the framework of this visit. The Secretary General noted with satisfaction that she would attend the inaugural meeting of the Council of Europe-Azerbaijan Action Plan 2022-2025 during her visit.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov briefed the Council of Europe official on the post-conflict situation in the region, the implementation of trilateral statements and steps taken by Azerbaijan in this regard, the delimitation process, as well as the restoration and reconstruction work in the liberated territories. The Minister spoke about the serious consequences of the landmine threat in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan, as well as the humanitarian demining work carried out by the Government of Azerbaijan. The Secretary General of the Council of Europe was informed that Armenia has not provided any information on the fate of about 4,000 Azerbaijanis who have been missing since the early 1990s. It was noted that the mass graves found in the liberated territories testify to the systematic and deliberate killing of Azerbaijanis by Armenia and the concealment of information about it.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov shared Azerbaijan's views on the future development of the region. It was stressed that the normalization of relations based on the principles of international law, including the delimitation of borders and the opening of all communications, the full implementation of the provisions of the trilateral statements are important to ensure peace, stability and progress in the region.
The sides discussed topical issues of the regional and international agenda, the situation in and around Ukraine, as well as other issues of mutual interest.
