No:123/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme Achim Steiner

On 15 March 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme Achim Steiner, who is on a visit to our country to participate in the XI Global Baku Forum.

During the meeting, the cooperation agenda within the framework of the United Nations Development Programme, existing prospects, issues arising from the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), as well as the regional situation in the post-conflict period were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, referring to the positive results of long-term cooperation between the United Nations Development Programme and Azerbaijan, noted the importance of continuing the existing partnership.

Referring to the preparations for COP29, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov brought to attention that our country is conducting a substantive negotiation process with various sides in order to successfully implement its COP29 chairmanship, and at the same time necessary organizational measures are being taken.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, referring to the restoration and reconstruction, as well as peace efforts carried out by our country in the post-conflict period, brought to attention that the massive mining of our territories by Armenia, as well as the refusal of this country to provide information about mined areas, pose a threat to the lives and health of our citizens, as well as to the ongoing restoration works. The necessity of mobilizing international efforts in mine clearance was emphasized.

Achim Steiner noted that Azerbaijan’s achievements in the field of development are exemplary. It was stated that the United Nations Development Programme attaches importance to combating the mine threat, including discussing initiatives in this direction.

It was stated that the position and approach demonstrated by Azerbaijan as the COP29 President, a country more known for its rich hydrocarbon resources, is commendable, and wishes were expressed for a successful chairmanship in this direction.

During the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
