On 26 February 2025, within the framework of his official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
The one-on-one meeting between the ministers was followed by an expanded meeting with the participation of delegations from both sides.
During the meeting, issues on the bilateral and multilateral agenda between Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia, cooperation within regional and international organizations, as well as regional and international matters of mutual interest, including the situation in the Middle East, were discussed.
The sides emphasized that mutual respect and contacts between the leaders of the two countries give a special impetus to relations. It was noted that the cultural closeness, historical friendship, mutual respect, support, and understanding between Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia contribute to the development of cooperation, and that such visits and contacts are useful in discussing opportunities to further strengthen existing cooperation.
The meeting covered cooperation in political, economic, trade, investment, energy, and humanitarian fields, and also highlighted the importance of mutually beneficial cooperation within multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement.
The activities of the Joint Commission on cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment, technology, culture, sports, and youth between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were also discussed, noting that the Commission serves as an important platform for advancing cooperation in relevant areas.
During the meeting, the ministers expressed satisfaction with the cooperation between Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia in the field of alternative energy production. In this regard, it was noted that the desalination plant project for producing drinking water from seawater in Azerbaijan, led by a consortium headed by Saudi Arabia’s “ACWA Power” company, will make an additional contribution to cooperation.
It was emphasized that Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has created new opportunities for cooperation, and an exchange of views was held on the implementation of joint initiatives in areas such as green energy and environmental protection.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also briefed his counterpart on the current situation and realities in the region in the post-conflict period, the large-scale reconstruction and rebuilding efforts carried out in the liberated territories, and efforts to combat the mine threat. Gratitude was expressed for Saudi Arabia’s support for demining activities.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on the situation around Gaza, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
In addition, other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest were reviewed.
