Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with George Vella, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malta

Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with George Vella, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malta within his official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 29th of April, 2016.

Taking into consideration of Malta’s presidency of the European Union in 2017, the sides exchanged their views on the current status and the ways of development of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Malta. They noted the existence of good opportunities for advancing the cooperation in the fields of economy, energy and tourism between the two countries. 

Touching upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, Minister Elmar Mammadyarov informed his Maltese counterpart about the latest escalation along the line of contact of the armed forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan, the provocations of the armed forces of Armenia by shelling the Azerbaijani civilians using large-caliber weapons. The minister added that to achieve the resolution of the conflict, first and foremost, the Armenian forces have to be withdrawn from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the fact of military occupation must be ended and a comprehensive political process must be launched.

In order to expand the legal framework between the two countries, the sides signed the “Convention between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Malta for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income”, “Agreement on cooperation in the fields of youth and sports between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Malta” and “Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malta”.

At the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the global and regional issues of mutual interest.
